Thick Hair Troubles

HI Everyone!

This is my first life post. I have had trouble thinking of what to post here, because of lock down there isn't much to talk about. However, after having a think I thought I would share my advice and recommendations on thick hair and what products I have found beneficial.

For all of my life, I have battled with not liking my hair and liking it. It was and still is such an effort to style or do something with. No one in my close family has thick hair apart from my auntie so it must have skipped a generation ( thanks for that! ). Over the years I resulted in just putting my hair up as I couldn't deal with the hassle of spending all the time on it and then still not being pleased with the end product.

Throughout school I was the same, I always tried ways to help it or make it easier to style but just gave up due to trying so many products and none of them working. It did really affect my self confidence and I always hated the fact that my hair was thick, 'why couldn't my hair just be thin and straight like everyone else?'

Looking back on it, everyone at some point wants the opposite of what hair type they have, whether it be curly to straight, or straight to curly. As I have got older I have accepted the fact my hair is thick and frizzy and now I try and embrace my natural hair as much as possible.

I have also finally got a hair routine that I feel really helps my hair and keeps it in good condition. I thought I would share these products and also my hair struggles, in case anyone out there can relate and needs some good old hair advice!

I wish I had done more research when I was younger, and tried to find people recommending good products for thick hair! There wasn't as much information then as there is now, but it would of helped me feel better about my own hair, even if I had only come across one person talking about it.

Another thing I discovered recently was that when using the right products, I actually have curly hair and not just a giant frizz ball! Which makes a bit more sense as to why it was always a mix of waves and frizz.

I have also recently had a tumour removed from the spine, and since that I have found it even more difficult to manage my thick hair. Using all these products helps enable me to look after it in a way that makes it not too much of a strain on my back.

My holy grail products, ranging from hair tools, to oils etc!

  • The main hair brush I use to brush my hair after it has been washed is the: WetBrush paddle Detangler from Look Fantastic. Unfortunately, it is out of stock but if you keep an eye out, hopefully it will come back in:)

  • The brush I use when I dry my hair to help defrizz it is a: Ceramic Round Brush. I have linked a similar one as mine is old so they do not sell it anymore.

  • I go between a couple of shampoo and conditioners, but I have found that the one that is best for my frizzy hair, is the: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder ( there are other ones available for different hair colours) Always shop around as supermarkets are one of the best places to look for the best deals.

  • When planning what look I am going for, I will always use Aragon Oil as it helps smooth the ends of my hair and it makes it softer for when I then go to style it. When I do this it makes it easier and less of a struggle for me.

  • To achieve straight hair, the main product I use is the: Davines OI Oil. It is an expensive product but I have found using this helps me achieve the straight look I am going for. The other products in the range are also good and I am hoping to try more in the future.

  • To achieve curly hair, the main product I use in is the: Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream. It was something I recently discovered when searching around for a product that would define my curls. It was a bargain and is amazing for helping shape curls and make them more pronounced.

  • For the actual appliances, both of my straightener's and hair dryer are the same make. The hairdryer is: KIPOZI Hair Dryer Iconic for frizz free hair, complete with diffuser. The straightener is the: KIPOZI Pro Hair Straightener's.

I have found over the years of testing many products, that just because it's more expensive, doesn't necessarily mean that it will work any better than a cheaper alternative. The discovery of the KIPOZI hair tools showed me that cheaper appliances can work just as well, compared to ones like GHD's.

On my next post, I am hoping to include some images to show you the difference in my hair after it has been washed, then comparing it to when I have styled it using the listed products:)

As always, please feel free to give me any feedback! Lucy xoxoxo
